Effectiveness of Sublethal Doses of Metarhizium robertsii with Bacillus thuringiensis, Individual and Combined Treatment Against the Tomato Leafminer In Vitro

The results suggest that the combination of entomopathogenic fungi and the insecticidal protein of B. thuringiensis can be exploited as potential biocontrol agents against T. absoluta.

Pupation and adult emergence were significantly reduced by these potent isolates, which were also compatible with Tuta pheromone (TUA‐Optima®) with ≥90% conidial germination 24 hr post‐exposure and could be developed as effective biopesticides and used in combination with TUA‐optima® for mass trapping and autodissemination for T. absoluta management in solanaceous crop production systems.

An additive effect for Tuta absoluta control by the two biocontrol technologies even though the entomopathogenic fungus reduces the fitness of the parasitoid, such as adult longevity and its performance, and parasitised larval emergence is concluded.

  • 2007

The susceptibility of third instar Helicoverpa armigera to seven strains of three entomopathogenic fungal species, i.e. Metarhizium anisopliae, Beauveria bassiana and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus, was tested under laboratory conditions using the larval immersion method to characterize the age-dependent mortality of different larval stages.

Maize (variety Katumani) was planted in a greenhouse and plants were infested with Chilo partellus second instar larvae 3 and 4 weeks after plant emergence and growth of infested unsprayed plants was less than that of fungi treated plants.

The findings suggest that Bt chickpeas and M. anisopliae are compatible to control H. armigera, and resistance to Cry2A did not cause any fitness costs that became visible as increased susceptibility to the fungus.
