I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I'd love you to love me
I'm begging you to beg me
I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I'd love you to love me

I'll shine up my old brown shoes
I put on a brand new shirt
I get home early from work
If you say that you love me
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin' (cryin', cryin')
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin' (cryin', cryin')

Feelin' all alone without a friend
You know you feel like dyin' (dyin', dyin')
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin' (cryin', cryin')

I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I'd love you to love me
I'm begging you to beg me

I'll shine up my old brown shoes
I put on a brand new shirt
I get home early from work
If you say that you love me
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin' (cryin', cryin')
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin'

Feelin' all alone without a friend
You know you feel like dyin' (dyin', dyin')
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin' (cryin', cryin')

Feelin' all alone without a friend
You know you feel like dyin'
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I
See you cryin' (cryin', cryin')
Ooh

I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I'd love you to love me
I'm begging you to beg me

    Song Meaning

I think the meaning is fairly obvious, but I just want to say more specifically that this song is about a guy who wants a girl to like him as much as he likes her. He wants her to have the same degree of passion and intense feelings that he does. There's always a parallel between the way he feels and what he wants her to feel. The intensity increases from want to need, love, and even begging. He doesn't just want to win the girl over, he wants her to be in love with him. A simple and straightforward meaning.

I imagine that this girl is someone lofty and seemingly unattainable. Maybe she doesn't show much interest in him and she puts on a tough exterior. When he asks "didn't I see you crying" it's almost like he's spotted a chink in her armor and can now see that she has a more vulnerable side to her after all, and perhaps there is room in her heart to have those same sort of feelings for him.

The crowd in Cheap Trick's live version is repeating the word "cryin'". On the origianal studio version which had a honky tonk feel to it the "cryin" lyric was echoed so the crowd is reproducing the "missing" echo.

I am pretty sure Cheap Trick was the original maker of the song, in one of the covers I have, they lead into the song by commenting "This is for all the old folks, were gonna take you back to 1979" or something like that.

this song was first done by cheap trick in 1977 on there cheap trick album and was written by there guitar player Rick Nielsen. but the verison everyone knows is the live one from 1978 which was recorded live in japan. as to what the people are yelling i have no clue, and from what ive heard the crowd was added in later to sound louder then they really did. and yeah so many people have done it, thats why its such a great song. but no one does as good as cheap trick.

I absolutely love this song. It's one of the best classic rock songs, period. The original is waaaaaay better than Letters to Cleo's cover--that version is too scratchy and cacophonous. I love how the song conveys its meaning in such a simple, yet catchy way. And I think Ander Knight has a good idea--if a guy sang this song to me, I'm pretty sure I'd have to give him a chance. Anyone can identify with the feelings the song expresses. When you want someone to love you, you are willing to do anything for him or her, and it's a sweet gesture you wouldn't do for anyone else. People who find love like this are so lucky.

This is a great song, and I think I know whats so appealing about it other than its amazing vocals, guitar, and drum beat, and of course the solo. People love this song because so many people can relate to it. And people can relate to it because it's meaning is obvious.

Just 61 comments. Obviously it's because it's an old song, but who isn't familiar with Cheap Trick....a part of music history. This song is not about co-dependence; rather, it's about a natural want/need to be desired. It's a very human song. All songs about unrequaited love are...

Hey Jealousy Gin Blossoms My Interpretation on this is that the narrator in the song used to be with a girl that he loved so much and but during that time he was one of the cool guys at school that lived freely(partying and alcohol, etc.) and he wasn't really able to get over his former glory. on the other hand, his girlfriend/ex matured, and started thinking about their future and got a job/career. and since he became much like an alcoholic bum of a sort, he got jealous with the girl having to work all the time having no time for him so didn't felt like "he mattered to her". somewhere in there, they broke up. so one night he went to her place all drunk so he's got this "too drunk to drive" excuse to stay. Trying to somehow patch things between them by telling her that she was "the best he ever had" and that he's really sorry for having "blew up" their relationship years ago, or else they'd still be together. On the second verse he was trying to tell her that all he really want is to be with her and that he has somehow improved that if she'd take him back, he'd no longer drink and sleep around and if she'll accept that he's still in the process of picking himself up and not to expect a great make over, then she might not be let down. The chorus is his way of telling her that they can still do what they used to find exiting or an adrenaline rush and that by doing so, even if the past is gone, they might still be able to pick-up some of the pieces of their past and replace their past failures with a renewed love to take it's place. The last part he says, "she took my heart", means he never got over her and probably never will. The line "there's only one thing I couldn't start", means that he couldn't actually start the conversation with her because he was too drunk to think straight and all of these words were just running inside his head and these were all the things he wanted to tell her. Love in a Vacuum 'Til Tuesday Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in "There was a timeyou opened up every doorwayyou didn't mind if everythingwasn't your way"then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,"Don't pull awaythat goes against what you told meI look in your eyes I realize what you've sold meis love in a vacuum"so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,"I think you've changedbut you insist thatthat's not true"quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum","You look so strange, so distantthat you're hardly youNow I can seehow you have been acting differentYou say it's mebut I knowthat it isn'tit's love in a vacuum"but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines"You will be lonelyif you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have, "Love in a vacuumand that's not enoughlove in a vacuumYou will be lonelyyou'll be the only one who feels this wayYou will be lonelyif you leave me alone You will be lonelyyou'll be the only one who feels this wayit's just not enough"you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment, "You will be lonelyyou'll be the only one who feels this wayit's just not enoughand just waityou will be lonelyLove in a vacuumLove in a vacuum and that's not enoughLove in a vacuum".'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the co*ke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song. Quintessential Aimee Mann. Grand Theft Auto Insane Ian The way this song speaks to me🥺🥺when I sing it I feel like I relate Fast Car Tracy Chapman "Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time. Cajun Girl Little Feat Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
