This new motor looks great. It is coming out mid-January of 2023. It is pricy for now but is is so sweet. Someone will jump to the head of the learning curve on this topic and be an early adaptor.

Sounds great, until you realize that every descriptor is no more than a glittering generality. "Designed with subtlety"? WTF does that mean?

It requires pairing with a cell phone and costs $900. If someone brought me one, I would install it. But I personally would put my money elsewhere.

Its a well known company in the DIY community. Its also building on what they learned from their previous two motors. As to the cell phone pairing, wasn't that the X1 Pro when you used the Eggrider program? If its the VESC-based controller they have now, that pairing is only a good thing as they allow considerable customization. Not like the Eggrider that phones home and has never risen past the stage of 'buggy'. From what I understand, the Photon has a default 1200w peak mode for the USA and you can leave it at that and stay away from the app.

If I had a use for one, I wouldn't hesitate. I have an X1 Pro and it is a little beast. But its not for the general public who just wants an 'on' switch. I suspect this one - and its more powerful follow-on ( 2023 CYC Photon Mid-drive (9) ) are both in that category.

No more CYC motors for me. Had version 1 and 2 of the Pro and they ended up being expensive paper weights.

I think I had better luck because I never even tried to install their controller at the time and went straight to an aftermarket. I think this many years later, with what is - finally - their VESC-based controller, they have it down pat. But all of the public beta testers who came before them had to suffer while they got there.

The controller was the main source of the pain but other issues like speed sensor breaking regularly, bolts shearing off on the chain ring, and display failure.

Yeah my controller came with an Eggrider v2 so I sort of sidestepped that one - and learned why an Eggrider is not perfect, either.

Cyc is having a Zoom meeting Tuesday with the president of Cyc, Jon Chan. The subject being the Photon. I'm trying to attend despite being out of town on a business trip. Does anyone have any questions they want answered about the motor, that I can posit when I am on?

One thing I am planning on is asking about whether an alternate cable exit is on the table for a future release. The way it sticks up as it does is not ideal I think. Something that is angled and that can be reset would be a plus.

FAQs

What is the range of the CYC Photon battery? ›

Estimated range of the 624Wh battery over pretty testing Pennine terrain was around 50 miles, which is certainly respectably efficient. I don't normally have much to say about apps as I find they don't add much to the riding experience, but the CYC Photon app is the exception that proves the rule.

What is the CYC Photon for mountain bike? ›

The PHOTON is a compact and lightweight mid-drive electric bike conversion kit made to create a smooth pedal assist feeling that feels natural and seemless. Rated at 750W & 110N. m. Compatible with 36V to 52V battery packs.

How many watts is a CYC Photon? ›

It can be set up as a class 1, class 2, or class 3 ebike from 250 to 750 watts. Off-road modes go from 750 to over 1,000 watts. It comes with everything you need except the battery, and we have those in 52v at 50 amps and from 500-watt hours to over 1300-watt-hours.

How long do lithium ebike batteries last? ›

You should typically expect a battery to last between 3 and 5 years if it is well maintained. (A lithium-ion battery will slowly lose its capacity over time, even if it's not used.)

What is the lifespan of a lithium ion polymer battery? ›

If the device is used daily and requires daily charging, a lithium polymer battery with a 300-500 charge cycle lifespan would last approximately 10 to 17 months (300 to 500 days) before experiencing noticeable capacity loss. Remember that adequately handling the lithium polymer battery can extend its life.

What mountain bike does Arnold Schwarzenegger use? ›

A true premium experience, the toughest bike we make is ridden by the toughest man we know, Arnold Schwarzenegger! The Zeus Fat Bikes run big 4.5” tyres for amazing grip and the ability to traverse terrain that regular bikes can't even dream of attempting.

How many lumens do I need for mountain biking at night? ›

For mountain biking you will want around 900 to 1000 lumens no matter what. Whether that is a helmet mounted light like the Hangover, or a handlebar mounted light like the Trail Evo. However more lumens is only part of the equation.

How do you convert photons to Watts? ›

Let's take a decent flux, say 50 million green (520 nm) photons per second. The energy (units = J) is equal to the frequency (units = 1/s) times Planck's constant (units = J*s). The wattage is the energy per unit time (watts = J/s).

What is the range of the 750 WH battery? ›

Under optimal conditions, it is possible to travel up to 140 km.

What is the range of lithium polymer battery? ›

The voltage of a single LiPo cell depends on its chemistry and varies from about 4.2 V (fully charged) to about 2.7–3.0 V (fully discharged). The nominal voltage is 3.6 or 3.7 volts (about the middle value of the highest and lowest value) for cells based on lithium-metal-oxides (such as LiCoO2).

What is the range of cells in a Ultium battery? ›

This modular design allows GM engineers to optimize energy density and vehicle layout. The GM Ultium battery options scale from 50 kilowatt-hours to over 200 kWh, which will enable a GM-estimated range of 600 kilometres or more on a full charge.
